Visual Research Paper

Objective:

This research project was completed as the final project in my Junior-level design class. For this project, I chose to explore the life and art of one of my favorite fine artists, Thomas Hart Benton.

Process:

From the start of the project, I treated it more like a research paper than a design assignment. I read part of his autobiography, as well as other supporting texts, and spent hours in a sketchbook copying his work to gain a better understanding of his artistic choices.

Outcome:

This project was a big eye-opener for me in seeing how important the front-end of a project is. Having an understanding of his life and work made the visual direction for the project more clear, and the back-end of the design process was easy and exciting.
